What you need to buy a SIM

- A fingerprint scan — registering a SIM to your identity with a fingerprint is mandatory in Saudi Arabia. The kiosk staff do it at the counter.
- Payment by card or cash in Saudi riyals.
Activation is normally quick, but queues at the kiosks build up when several long-haul flights land together — common at night during the Umrah season.
eSIM and roaming alternatives
If your phone supports eSIM, a travel eSIM bought before you fly lets you land already connected and skip the kiosk entirely. Roaming on your home SIM also works but is usually the most expensive way to use data. Whichever you choose, check that your phone is unlocked if you plan to use a Saudi SIM.
If the queue is long
You do not have to buy a SIM at the airport. Operator shops are easy to find in Jeddah, in the hotel districts of Makkah and Madinah, and in Riyadh's malls. The one thing to avoid is arriving with no data and no pre-arranged way of leaving the airport:
- Pre-book your transfer so you know who is collecting you and where.
- Save the booking confirmation and the driver's WhatsApp number offline (a screenshot is enough).
- Use the airport Wi-Fi to send a quick message on landing.
Connectivity on the road to Makkah and Madinah
The Jeddah Airport to Makkah transfer is about 80 km — roughly an hour — on a busy, well-covered expressway, so you will usually have signal the whole way. The Jeddah to Madinah drive is around four hours through open country, where coverage can be patchy in places; download offline maps and any documents you need before you set off.
