Quick answer

Madinah to Makkah is about 430 km on the Hijrah highway — around 4 hours of driving, plus the time you spend at the Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali) Miqat and any rest stop. A private car is quoted as one fixed fare agreed before booking, depending on the vehicle and stops. It goes from your Madinah hotel to the nearest permitted drop-off for your Makkah hotel, with no change of transport.

The journey in numbers

Distance~430 km (from the central Markaziyah area to central Makkah)
Driving time~4 hours in normal traffic
MiqatDhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali), on the southern edge of Madinah
RoadThe Hijrah highway — a long, well-maintained multi-lane motorway
Typical stopsThe Miqat, then one rest and prayer stop around halfway

From Madinah Airport (MED) directly to Makkah it is about 450 km and roughly 4 hours 20 minutes, plus stops — see MED to Makkah.

Step by step

  1. Pickup at your Madinah hotel. Around Masjid an-Nabawi, cars collect from the nearest permitted point; the driver helps with luggage from there.
  2. The Miqat. Many pilgrims change into Ihram at the hotel and only pray and make their intention at Abyar Ali; others change at the mosque, which has large washing and changing facilities. Allow 20–40 minutes, more for a family. Our Miqat guide covers the rules.
  3. The highway. Long, straight and monitored by speed cameras. Service stations along the way have fuel, toilets, prayer areas and food.
  4. Arriving in Makkah. There is a security checkpoint on the approach — keep passports handy. Near the Haram, roads close to vehicles at busy times, so you are set down at the nearest permitted point for your hotel.

When to leave

Think about when you want to start your Umrah, then count back.

  • Leaving after Fajr gets you to Makkah around midday — hot, but with the afternoon to rest before Tawaf in the cooler evening.
  • Leaving after Dhuhr or Asr gets you in for the evening, when many pilgrims prefer to perform Umrah.
  • Overnight departures are common in summer; the road is quieter and cooler, but arriving tired before a long Umrah is hard on older pilgrims.

In Ramadan, and especially in the last ten nights, Makkah's central area is extremely busy — allow extra time for the final stretch.

Which vehicle

Capacities vary by model — check vehicle classes. If anyone in the group uses a wheelchair, say so when booking so the vehicle has the boot space.

Car or Haramain train?

The Haramain high-speed railway is faster between stations, and a good option for a light-travelling adult. But:

  • Madinah station is not at the Haram — you need a car to get there, with your luggage.
  • Makkah station is not beside the Haram either — you need a second car to your hotel.
  • You must be in Ihram before the train passes the Miqat, so you change at the hotel or stop at Abyar Ali on the way to the station.
  • Trains have luggage limits and set departure times.

For a family with luggage, those two extra transfers often cancel out the time saved. For a solo traveller with a small bag, the train is a fine choice. The Makkah–Madinah comparison guide has more detail.

How the fare works

The fare covers the whole journey from your Madinah pickup to your Makkah drop-off, including the Miqat stop and a rest stop if you mention them when booking. It depends on the vehicle class and any extra stops — not on the time of day or demand. Pay cash to the driver or by bank transfer; an electronic receipt is available on request. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup.

Common questions

How long is the drive from Madinah to Makkah?

About 4 hours for roughly 430 km in normal traffic, plus time at the Miqat and any rest stop.

Can we stop at Abyar Ali for Ihram?

Yes — tell us when you book and the stop is part of the trip.

Can we leave late at night?

Yes. Bookings are available 24/7, and many families travel overnight in summer.

Is there anything to see on the way?

The drive is mostly open desert and rocky hills, so most families just make the Miqat and rest stops. If you want to visit the historic site of Badr, book a separate Badr Ziyarat from Madinah — it is not on the direct highway.
