Quick answer
From Jeddah Airport (JED) to Madinah you can take a private transfer (about 410 km, around 4 hours, straight to your hotel), the Haramain high-speed train from the airport's own station (around 2–2.5 hours to Madinah station, then a car to your hotel), an intercity coach, or a domestic flight. The train is fastest station to station; a private car is simplest door to door with luggage, children or a late arrival. Neither is best for everyone.

Your options at a glance
| Option | Time | Door to door? | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | ~4 hours (about 410 km) | Yes — airport to hotel | As much as the vehicle holds | Families, late arrivals, lots of luggage, groups |
| Haramain train | ~2–2.5 hours airport station → Madinah station | No — car needed in Madinah | Limits apply | Light travellers, daytime arrivals |
| Intercity coach | Longer than driving | No — coach station at each end | Hold luggage | Budget travel |
| Domestic flight | Short flight, plus airport time at both ends | No | Airline allowance | Travellers already flying, connecting itineraries |
Option 1: Private transfer
A pre-booked car meets you at JED and drives you straight to your hotel in Madinah — about 410 km and around 4 hours on the motorway, plus any rest stops.
Why people choose it
- No change of transport after a long flight: one vehicle from the terminal to the hotel, with all your luggage.
- Timing is yours. If your flight lands at 2 a.m., or immigration takes longer than expected, the car still goes when you are ready — share your flight number when you book and we check it before pickup.
- Families and groups stay together in one SUV, van or coaster.
- One fixed fare agreed before booking, for the vehicle, not per person.
The trade-offs
- It is slower than the train on the main stretch.
- For one person with a small bag, it costs more than a train ticket.
Option 2: Haramain high-speed train
The Haramain railway connects King Abdulaziz International Airport station — opened in December 2019 on a short branch from the main line — with Jeddah's Al Sulaymaniyah station, King Abdullah Economic City and Madinah. From the airport to Madinah takes around 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on stops.
Why people choose it
- It is the fastest way to cover the distance.
- Comfortable and predictable once you are on board.
The trade-offs
- Madinah station is not at the Haram. You need a taxi or transfer from the station to your hotel — with your luggage.
- Timetables. You travel at set times, and you need to get from the arrivals hall to the station and wait for your train. Check the official Haramain railway timetable and booking channels for current times and fares.
- Luggage limits apply — significant for Umrah travellers with large suitcases.
A common hybrid: take the train, and pre-book a short transfer from Madinah station to your hotel.
Option 3: Intercity coach
Coach services connect Jeddah and Madinah. They are the cheapest option, but slower than driving, run to a timetable and drop you at a coach station rather than your hotel. They suit budget travellers with flexible time.
Option 4: Domestic flight
Flights between Jeddah and Madinah are short, but with check-in, security and the airport transfer at each end, the total journey time is often similar to the train or a car. They make most sense if you are connecting from another flight on the same ticket.
Which should you choose?
- Family with children or older relatives, or more than one large case each: private transfer.
- Arriving late at night: private transfer — no timetables.
- Solo or a couple, light bags, daytime arrival: the train is hard to beat; add a short car at the Madinah end.
- Group of 10 or more: a private minibus or coaster keeps everyone together.
- Tight budget, flexible time: coach.
Practical tips
- Umrah order of travel. If you are going to Madinah first, you do not need Ihram on arrival; you will enter it at Abyar Ali when you later go to Makkah. See our Miqat guide.
- SIM and data. Buy a SIM at JED or have an eSIM ready — useful for messaging your driver and checking train times. See SIM cards at Jeddah Airport.
- Hotel drop-off. Around Masjid an-Nabawi, cars set down at the nearest permitted point; the final stretch is on foot.
- Rest stops. On the road, the driver will stop for prayer and refreshments on request.
How the private transfer fare works
One fixed fare for the trip, agreed before booking, based on the vehicle and any stops — not on time of day or demand. Pay cash to the driver or by bank transfer; an electronic receipt is available on request. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup. Starting from Jeddah city rather than the airport? Common questions
How far is Jeddah Airport from Madinah?
About 410 km by road — around 4 hours by car in normal traffic.
Is there a train from Jeddah Airport to Madinah?
Yes. The Haramain railway has a station at King Abdulaziz International Airport, with services to Madinah in around 2 to 2.5 hours. You will still need a car from Madinah station to your hotel.
Which is cheaper, train or private car?
For one or two people, the train is usually cheaper. For a family or group, one private vehicle priced per trip can be close to — or less than — several train tickets plus taxis at the Madinah end.
