Four ways to take a taxi — and how each is priced

None of these is "best" for every trip. The useful question is which one fits this journey.

What pushes the price up

Distance and route

The obvious one. A ride across Riyadh and a run from Jeddah to Madinah are different orders of magnitude. For intercity journeys, the route and distance are what everything else is built on — see our intercity transfer guide.

Time in traffic

Meters and apps charge for time as well as distance, so rush hour in Riyadh or Jeddah, or the roads around the Haram in Makkah after a prayer, cost more on a meter. A fixed-fare transfer does not change with traffic.

Demand

App prices rise when demand peaks — in Ramadan evenings, around big events, at busy times at the airports. Booking ahead at a fixed fare removes that variable.

Vehicle size

Groups and families with luggage often need an SUV or van. Two app rides for one family can cost more than one larger pre-booked vehicle — and keeps everyone together. Compare vehicle classes.

Stops and waiting

A Miqat stop, a second pickup or waiting at a shopping centre all add to the trip. With a pre-booked transfer they are included in the quote when you mention them up front.

Which option for which trip?

Airport to hotel

Short rides inside a city

For a solo traveller with a phone and no luggage, an app or street taxi is usually the cheapest choice. If you have several stops in a day, an hourly private driver is often simpler.

Between cities

Jeddah ↔ Makkah, Madinah ↔ Makkah, Riyadh ↔ Dammam, Madinah → AlUla: these are where a fixed fare matters most. You agree the total once, the driver is used to the road, and luggage is not a problem. Browse routes with distances and drive times.

Families, pilgrims and groups

Getting good value

• Book early for Ramadan, the peak Umrah months and major event weeks.
• Match the car to the group — don't pay for a van when a sedan fits, or squeeze into a sedan with five suitcases.
• Mention every stop when you ask for a quote.
• Confirm the total and the pickup details in writing before you travel.

Common questions

Are taxis in Saudi Arabia metered?

Street taxis generally use a meter. Pre-booked private transfers use a fixed fare agreed before booking instead.

Do I need to tip?

No. Tipping is optional; some travellers give a little for help with heavy luggage.

Can I pay by card?

For our transfers, payment is by cash to the driver or bank transfer. Ride-hailing apps take card payment in the app.
